#getupsanyi!

My Dearest Friends,

I would like to tell you about the events of the last few years, as a result of which we launched the Get Up, Sanyi! campaign to give a structure to your donations and help. It took me two years, after the initial shock, of shutting myself away and struggling, to get to the point where I am talking openly about my condition and asking for your help.

In April 2023, without any warning, the most horrific event of my life happened: a spinal cord stroke. I was pushed on a stretcher for hours in the Emergency Department of the Clinic of Szeged, trying to find out what had led to my inability to move my legs from the navel down, my pelvis, I was the most helpless I've ever been. Countless tests and examinations followed and I couldn't believe that this was happening to me. I thought it was just a bad dream and I was going to wake up. Unfortunately, I didn't wake up from the nightmare, I was further shocked when I was told that the cause was simply not found. All my blood results were normal, MRI, ultrasound showed nothing that my doctors could conclude as the cause.

I was admitted to the Neurorehabilitation Unit, where I started the mental and physical rehabilitation from my trauma. I spent four months with the doctors, physiotherapists and nurses of the department, during which time I was confronted with the fact that I was entering a period of my life that was perhaps the most difficult: learning to live a different lifestyle, to move around with aids and accessories - and to cope. Meanwhile, of course, I was unable to accept that life had benched me like that.

I experienced my 50th birthday as a completely different person

I was on the road, chasing happiness, pursuing joy, enjoying my independence, surrounding myself with a lot of valuable people as a musician. After more than a decade with my band, things started to settle down and I finally bought my own apartment, which I renovated with my own two hands, and then fate comes along and tells me that she has other plans.

From the first few months and ever since, I have been fighting incredibly hard every day.

After 4 months in hospital in Szeged, I was transferred to the National Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Institute in Budapest, which is a certified institute for spinal cord injuries. Here I was prepared for a life in a wheelchair, taught the skills a wheelchair user needs to manage in life until they are able to stand on their feet. I learnt self-catheterisation, I was given an orthosis that enables me to do the daily recommended standing up. My friends and family have invested a lot of energy in making my everyday life easier, they visited me every day in Szeged, they even tried to hold my hand 2-3 times a week in Pest and they didn't let me start downhill. Unfortunately, I had lost my father in the meantime and I was not able to say goodbye to him in person. I was discharged from Budapest in December 2023, and with that I was faced with a new set of questions to solve: is my apartment wheelchair accessible, can I manage the movements necessary for daily life, can I even fit through the bathroom door, etc. Things that others could not imagine were a huge obstacle for me, and I admit that I am now able to do things that at first seem impossible without any problems.

Even though my life has been turned upside down, I was very confident that somewhere in the world there would be a miracle cure that could help me.

It sounds cliché, but human relationships really are our most precious asset. A former musician colleague of mine, who happens to be a neurologist, heard about me and used all his knowledge and network of contacts to help me learn about international research into the treatment of spinal cord injuries. He gave me a device which, implanted on the hard membrane of my spinal cord, delivers an electrical impulse to the damaged but still regenerable part of the spinal cord, thus accelerating the healing of nerve cells. Since the spinal cord stimulator was implanted, I have felt new movement and strength in my legs, which my physiotherapist has also confirmed. Home help is essential, daily movement and exercise cannot be abandoned; the professionals I met at the clinic are tremendously dedicated to helping me, often beyond their resources.

In addition to my friends, I'm also very lucky to have a boss who tolerated my almost year-long absence and invited me back to work in the summer of 2024. Although only part-time, I am back with my old colleagues and trying to do my bit. It is a huge help to me as the cost of constant medication, catheters, adult diapers and disinfectants is just about covered by my disability pension, which I receive on the basis of 75% disability. I have to find the money to maintain my flat and to do 3 physiotherapy sessions a week, so that I don't fall over a certain point.

But somehow there is always a beacon of hope.

Now, too, a therapy that came to my attention in the case of a similar American musician seems to be shining through. Jesse Malin also had a spinal cord stroke in 2023 - a month apart - and like me, he lost function from the waist down. A friend of mine read about his story in Rolling Stone Magazine and sent it to me. I contacted him, and he told me about the therapies he had undergone and what he was planning to do. I was amazed when he announced his return concerts for December 2024. At his suggestion, I visited a clinic in Argentina where Jesse was treated for months and put back on his feet. Of course, he no longer can run marathons either, but he was able to stand on his walker and thank the people gathered for his charity concert for their support. The clinic uses stem cell treatment and has 20 years' experience of improving the quality of life of people who were previously unable to walk.

By Christmas 2024, I have this hope and after an interview with the clinic's doctor, I am waiting for the clinic's response on the financial implications of a six-month treatment in Buenos Aires.

As the faith of myself and those close to me is immense, we will not let this opportunity go to waste. We are determined to get me back on my feet and on stage. Because that has always meant freedom for me. Dear friends! Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I look forward to working with you in the future! With love, Kecskeméti Sanyi
